As much as I abhor the very thought of abortion, the more I think about it, the more I am convinced that if abortion is illegal, only criminals will provide them, and women will die as a result. Therefore, I believe that for the protection of the adolescent, poor and uneducated, as well as in the case of rape, incest, and mortal danger to the mother, abortion should be legal, safe, and rare.

However, abortion should not be treated as unbridled birth control, a procedure of convenience. Clinics performing this procedure must be required by law to counsel and completely educated women considering it, in all their options beyond birth control. The truth should be told them about the long-term negative and sometimes debilitating spiritual, emotional and psychological effects upon themselves. How many abortion clinics will tell their clientele that 30 years later, the woman who instigated Roe vs Wade has long since publically stated that she wishes she had never had an abortion and that she had never pursued the court case? How many have contacts to both religiously affiliated and private adoption agencies available at their clinics? How many have counselors to support a woman through either of these choices?

What is wrong with this country when the 'wise' and educated (people in perceived authority over the disadvantaged) insist that they must be condemned as unnatural in placing their child with an adoptive family, but killing that same child is a socially acceptable alternative? where in some states a teenager cannot get into an R-rated movie without parental consent, but they can get an abortion without it? Is not the very title 'Planned Parenthood' oxymoronic when the organization's primary service is abortion, and they focus their efforts in setting in stone the societal acceptance that abortion is as simple and insignificant as getting a cavity filled?

Again, abortion should be treated as the life-altering choice that it is, one that should not be made lightly or without all the facts fairly presented. The atrocities which occur with partial-birth and late-trimester abortions should not be tolerated. Doctors and hospitals should not be required by law to perform procedures which they find morally reprehensible. Parents must be allowed their rights as guardians of their own children to give counsel, support, and have part in the decision-making process.

FOCA will remove all regulation whatsoever and deny the rights of doctors, hospitals and parents of minors to act according to the dictates of their own conscience.
